Helen Utsal

Painting, Booth 309

'I am lucky enough to spend some time everyday in nature. I am drawn to quiet places and old trees. I feel like they are silent witnesses to our speedy human comings and goings; they will remain long after we have gone.  Nature is my sanctuary, my space for meditation, creation and renewal.  I like to use unexpected colours that convey the magic in Nature.’ Helen paints with acrylics, oils and cold wax interpreting Natures exuberant and vital spirit onto canvas. Striving for energy, and light in each painting, Helen celebrates colour, inviting you into a natural world that is expressive and emotive. Helen Utsal has been a professional fine artist since 2006 and is a member of CARFAC and the Federation of Canadian Artists, exhibiting in Canada, the U.S, China and France.  Co- founder and coordinator of Art Alchemy Studio; an artist run gallery and studios in Courtenay, BC. Early influences shaping her own approach to painting were artists using emotive, energetic mark-making, bold colours and dynamic gestures; Tom Thomson, Karl Appel, Paul Gauguin, the Fauvist artists, Impressionists and Expressionists.
