Mixed Media, Booth 616
The artwork of Rachael Speirs uses scrap fabric, paper, embroidery and gouache to create textural and narrative pieces. The result is a collage-like piece that creates a visual metaphor, connecting current events and human experiences. Rachael’s work is inspired by vintage children’s book illustration and this, in combination with the traditional textile handicraft, references the haunting experience of sifting through our memories — poignant and evocative; difficult to ignore or forget. Rachael is a self-taught artist and recipient of several awards including ‘Best Mixed Media’ at Riverdale Art Walk. Her Installation ‘The Island of Bonemeal’ was listed on Blog To as one of the top 5 ‘Must See’ installations for Design To. Rachael works from her home studio in Mississauga.
