Sam Loewen is a queer interdisciplinary artist and designer residing in Ottawa, Ontario. His artistic practice explores methods of codification within Western culture to discuss queer identities. Loewen's creative process is akin to the ordering of a library and the pruning of a garden; systems of organization, collection, and curation. He arranges, pairs, groups, stacks, orders, and compiles symbolic images with coded found objects to complicate, alter, and question their combined meanings. In his process, Loewen implements design tools, formalist aesthetics, screen-printing, and textile production techniques to produce clean compositions and precious objects. These visual strategies queer the distinctions between art, design, and craft methodologies.
